Venue and travel

Delegates are responsible for booking and arranging all of their own travel, including from the airport to the hotel or venue (and return).

The ACU HR in HE Community Conference will be held in the main campus building, Federation Hall (FED), of the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) – recommended

Flights to Waterloo region, Ontario

Some attendees, particularly in western Canada and areas of the USA, may be able to fly into Waterloo Regional Airport (YKF). This is a much smaller airport with limited flights but is a very convenient, closer option. The Delta Waterloo hotel is a 25 minute taxi drive away – book a taxi in advance with Waterloo Taxi for around CAD$40.

1. How to get from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Waterloo

Shuttle service – recommended

Airways Transit connects this airport with the Waterloo area, providing a 24/7 door-to-door shared ride service.

The University of Waterloo has arranged a special conference rate with them of CAD$79 per person one way (tax included), and lower fares for delegate group booking.

Airways Transit is located in Terminals 1 and 3. The trip takes approximately 60-90 minutes, depending on traffic.

Advance reservations are required for these special conference/group rates. You can book this shuttle service, including return trips: 

  • online at Enter the code ACU HR 2018, exactly as shown.
  • by phone 24 hours a day: 1 800 691 3045 (within Canada only), or 1 519 886 2121 (internationally). Remember to mention you are a ACU HR 2018 conference delegate at the University of Waterloo.


Waterloo Taxi costs approximately CAD$115.


Greyhound offers an inexpensive return bus service between this airport (Terminal 1) and the University of Waterloo (look for trips from ‘Toronto Pearson Airport, ON’ to ‘Waterloo University, ON’). From there you can book a Waterloo Taxi to your hotel, if required.

The Greyhound network also serves the main bus terminal in Kitchener (look for ‘Kitchener Charles St W, ON’), where you can take a city bus to the university campus, or a Waterloo Taxi to your hotel.


The airport offers several on-site car rentals. Typical travel time is approximately 1 hour in light traffic to 1.5 hours in heavy traffic.

Delta Hotel by Marriott (Waterloo) has parking onsite. To park at the conference venue, make sure to follow the Ring Road to Parking Lot M (Visitor) once you're on campus – see map and directions.

2. Train travel from Toronto to city of Kitchener/Waterloo

VIA Rail Canada is the national railway service, with connections across Canada. The Kitchener VIA Rail Station is located at 126 Weber Street West. Online train ticket purchase and booking | VIA Rail – costs vary between CAD$33-62 per seat (tax included).

GO Transit is an inter-regional train network in Ontario, which includes trains to Kitchener-Waterloo. The Kitchener GO Station is also located at 126 Weber Street West/Victoria Street North @ Weber St. W. The GO train network serves Kitchener with a few trains at peak times every day.

From either of these stations, you can reach the:

  • Delta Hotel by Marriott (Waterloo) by taxi in 10 minutes by booking in advance with Waterloo Taxi which will cost approximately CAD$15-20.
  • University of Waterloo by taxi (10 minutes: book in advance with Waterloo Taxi which will cost approximately CAD$15-20), or public transit in 30 minutes.

3. Bus travel from Toronto to city of Kitchener/Waterloo

The GO bus network (part of GO Transit) serves the city of Waterloo with over 30 buses a day from the Toronto area to the Waterloo region, including these bus routes which stop on the University of Waterloo main campus.

Greyhound Canada offers a bus service to cities and towns across North America. It serves Kitchener’s Charles St. Transit Terminal with over 20 buses a day from Toronto to Kitchener and many other bus routes in the region. Visitors can reach the Delta Hotel by Marriott (Waterloo) from the Charles St. Transit Terminal via taxi in 15 minutes for approximately CAD$15-20, or public transit in 30 minutes for CAD$3.25 cash only.

Grand River Transit provides a local bus service for the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge. It stops on the university campus – please see schedules.
