  • Growing knowledge: access to research in east and southern African universities Reports
  • This study, commissioned and funded by Arcadia, explores the many interrelated issues surrounding researchers' access to the latest academic information in east and southern Africa. It presents the findings of a 12-month, four-country study, focused on four institutions: Chancellor College (University of Malawi), the University of Nairobi (Kenya), the National University of Rwanda, and the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). It finds that academics and students in east and southern Africa - and across the wider continent - have an impressive range of high-quality peer-reviewed material available to them, including many of the leading journals from major international publishers. However, getting this material used in the day-to-day research and teaching activities of universities remains a challenge.

  • Unlocking the potential: new opportunities for Commonwealth libraries Reports
  • This first report of the ACU's Libraries and Information Network draws on a survey undertaken in 2008, and highlights the key role that libraries play, the challenges that they face, and their future potential. Libraries are delivering new and innovative services, are embracing changes in their role and responsibilities, and are securing greater support from within their institutions. They are doing this despite increasing pressures and growing demand. Substantial challenges remain, however; not least is the need for libraries and librarians to ensure that they are better positioned to make the most of new technologies.
