OCPP Bangladesh Scholars

Meet the Ocean Country Partnership Programme Scholars Bangladesh 2024.

The OCPP Scholarships [COUNTRY], funded through the UK’s Blue Planet Fund, supported emerging marine scientists from Bangladesh to undertake postgraduate study and research in marine science. Hosted by Bangladesh Agricultural University, the programme helped scholars develop the knowledge and skills needed to address marine environmental challenges and contribute to the sustainable management of marine resources in Bangladesh.

Shahina's field of research is eDNA for biodiversity and stock assessment in Sundarbans is very important for monitoring environmental health, noninvasive sampling, time and cost efficiency, comprehensive assessment and early detection of invasive species. This program will equip her with knowledge and skills needed to contribute to sustainable aquaculture practices, address biodiversity challenges and engage in impactful research within a region highly dependent on aquatic resources for both livelihood and economic growth.

Climate change affects water quality parameters. It changes temperature, oxygen level and others parameters that is associated with tilapia fish health. As a result of these changes, fish feel stress, they become weak and more susceptible to diseases. As well as this, growth, survival and production rates are decreasing. By studying this interaction, Suma's research will help to develop strategies to mitigate disease risk.

He hopes it will equip him with essential research techniques including bacterial isolation, identification and histopathology of infected shrimp. The findings will be helpful to diagnose bacterial infections and to produce disease free shrimp in Bangladesh.
