The third workshop in the Commonwealth Futures series will take place at Durban University of Technology (DUT) in South Africa – a country where Mahatma Gandhi spent much of his life.

The theme ‘Reimagining Peace’ will deepen students understanding of common challenges relating to violence and nonviolence, by providing a space for students to share varied perspectives and experiences of violence from their own unique contexts.

Through a series of interactive sessions, students will be empowered to share their experiences, knowledge and ideas – and model nonviolent ways of communicating and collaborating across difference.

Students will also work in groups to address a shared global challenge, namely: gender-based violence, climate change or inequality and develop tangible solutions to these issues. The outputs of these group discussions will be presented on the final day, with the ideas and key themes feeding into both the Commonwealth Youth Forum in Rwanda and the British Council’s Going Global conference in the UK.

Expert speakers and organisations involved in the workshop include:

  • International Centre of Nonviolence
  • Gandhi Development Trust
  • Commonwealth Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Unit

This event is convened in partnership with the British Council, Commonwealth Secretariat, and Durban University of Technology.
