The ACU believes passionately in the vital importance of higher education’s contribution to society and international development. As such, one of our strategic priorities for 2016-2021 is to champion the value of higher education for global challenges and positive social change through diverse campaigns and initiatives.

We aim to advocate for the role of higher education in contributing to international development and social change, delivering an effective voice for member universities to governments, international organisations, and other key stakeholders.

Two of the ways we do this is by providing a strong platform through which member universities can demonstrate the value of their work to a wider audience, and by adding to the stock of evidence on the value of higher education through evaluation and analysis of existing and future initiatives.

Ongoing campaigns

  • How do universities nurture interfaith respect? This campaign aims to identify ways in which universities – including some with a strong faith mission – can develop practical means of promoting and nurturing interfaith respect, intercultural understanding, and objectivity among staff, students, and their local communities. The ACU is asking staff and students at universities across the Commonwealth to endorse common values that bind them together, and to share examples of new or innovative practice in this area.

Completed campaigns

  • The world beyond 2015 – Is higher education ready? was a digital campaign run by the ACU between 2013 and 2015 to raise awareness, elicit expert views, gather evidence, and advocate for the role of higher education in delivering social and developmental impact beyond the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, 2000-2015).
