The Research Management Programme

Why is research management important?

Research management embraces anything that universities can do to maximise the impact of their research activity. It includes assistance in identifying new sources of funds, presenting research applications and advice on costing projects and negotiating contracts with external sponsors. It incorporates project management and financial control systems. It also involves help in exploiting research results – through commercialisation, knowledge exchange and dissemination to wider society.

These issues have a genuinely global dimension. In countries and universities throughout the world, policy has developed quickly over the past decade. Few believe that they have yet found perfect solutions. The problems they are seeking to address are common ones. An increasing proportion of research also involves international collaboration – making common systems and approaches increasingly necessary. Since its launch in April 2001, the programme has grown rapidly. We welcome participation not only from within the higher education sector, but also from independent research institutes, research sponsors and policy makers – in fact anyone who is concerned with ensuring that university research is managed and utilised to maximum effect.
