Titular Fellowships 2009

  • Wighton Titular Fellowship in Engineering has been awarded to Dr Kanayo Kenneth Alaneme, Lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. His programme will take place at the Indian Institute of Science, where he will undertake practical laboratory training for synthesis, characterisation and testing of materials under the guidance of Professor Srinivasa Ranganathan.
  • Wighton Titular Fellowship in Engineering has been awarded to Howard Hendricks, Lecturer at the University of Technology, Jamaica. He plans to research the development of a novel composite material made from Jamaican bauxite mining waste and recycled plastic for housing construction applications. He will be working with colleagues from the Department of Mechanical, Material and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK, in particular
  • Dr Richard Brooks and Dr Kevin Brown. The University of Manitoba Fellowship has been awarded to Irene Parvin, Assistant Professor at Bangladesh Open University. She plans to study the development of a conceptual framework of virtual interactive teacher training through open and distance learning for English language teachers in remote areas in Bangladesh. She will visit the University of Manitoba, Canada, where she will interact with Dr Kathleen Matheos.
  • The University of Manitoba Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Olanike Deji, Senior Lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. He has been invited by Dr Digvir Jayas to visit the Canadian Wheat Board Grain Storage Research Centre at the University of Manitoba, Canada, where he will study appropriate on-farm grain storage and drying systems and technologies for farmers to adopt in Nigeria.
  • The University of Manitoba Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Pushpa Abeysinghe, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. She will carry out collaborative research with Dr Genyi Li at the Department of Plant Science, University of Manitoba, Canada. The title of her programme is ‘Molecular characterisation of Cinnamomum spp. and C. verum Presl. accessions and evaluation of genetic relatedness of Cinnamon species in Sri Lanka’.
  • The  George Weston  Limited,  Canada, Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Md Giashuddin Miah, Professor at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh, to study the allelopathic effect of leaves of potential tree species on arable crops with Dr Damase Khasa at the Université Laval, Canada.
  • University  of Wales  Swansea  Fulton Fellowship has been awarded to Dr GayaRanawaka, Senior Lecturer at the Open University  of  Sri  Lanka. She will be working with Dr Patricia Lee in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Biosciences at Swansea University, UK, on applications of DNA barcode technology for conservation biology.
  • The University of Oxford Fellowship has been awarded to Dr  John  Tokpabere Agberia, Senior Lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to work with Dr Jeremy Coote at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University  of Oxford, UK. Dr Agberia will look at best practices in managing art exhibitions, the extent of development imperatives and organisation patterns in UK institutions, and the potential of virtual museums.

  • Dr Rutvica Andrijasevic, Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford, UK, will be working with Dr Brett Neilson, Centre for Cultural Research (CCR) at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, on ‘Precarious employment: a comparison between the UK and Australia’.

  • Dr Christopher Atkin, UNESCO Centre for Comparative Education Research at the University

    of Nottingham, UK, will be working with Professor S Y Shah, School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru Univer sity, India, on ‘Adult education and the development of civil society in Britain and India’.

  • Dr Michael Given, Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, UK, will be working with Dr Smadar Gabrieli, Department of Classical Archaeology at the University of Sydney, Australia, on ‘Kourion’s Amathus Gate Cemetery, Cyprus’.

  • Professor Carlos Gussenhoven, School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen

    Mary, University of London, UK, will be working with Professor Inyang Udofot, Department of English at the University of Uyo, Nigeria, on ‘A codification of Standard Nigerian English’.

  • Dr Stefanie Klappa, Department of Anthropology at the University of Kent, UK, will be working with Dr Bruno David, School of Geography and Environmental Science at Monash University, Australia, on Archaeology and human ecology of sago management, production and trade in the Kikori region, Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea’.

  • Dr Paul Knepper, Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, UK, will be working with Dr Jacqueline Azzopardi, Institute of Forensic Studies at the University

    of Malta, on ‘The legacy of the British Empire on the administration of justice in Malta’.

  • Professor Peter Langhorne, Academic Section of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Glasgow, UK, will be working with Dr Julie Bernhardt, National Stroke Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, on ‘A very early rehabilitation trial (AVERT): a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of very early mobilisation after stroke’.

  • Dr David McArdle, School of Law at the University of Stirling, UK, will be working with Professor Stephanus Cornelius, Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, on ‘Legal and policy issues in the provision of outdoor activities: Scotland and South Africa compared’.

  • Professor Julian Roberts, Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford, UK, will be working with Professor Allan Manson, Faculty of Law at Queen’s University, Canada, on ‘Sentencing in England and Wales and Canada’.

  • Dr Natalia Yakovleva, ESRC Research Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability,

    Sustainability and Society at Cardiff University, UK, will be working with Dr Andrew Grant, Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University, Canada, on ‘Governance
